The Doug Wright Awards were established in 2004 to honour the legacy of the late, great Doug Wright by recognizing the best in Canadian comics and graphic novels.

The prize is awarded annually to the author of the best Canadian work and the most promising talent published in English in the cartooning medium. Nominated works must be published in Canada in the calendar year for which the awards are presented. To be eligible, a work must be a first edition full length or collection, written by a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada.  

About Pigskin Peters' Award

Pigskin Peters' Award was established in 2008 as an affectionate tribute to Birdseye Center cartoonist Jimmy Frise, one of the most dynamic and gifted Canadian artists to work in the comics medium. Pigskin Peters is a noted character from Frise's early strips. Frise would go on to pass the cartooning torch to Doug Wright, who inherited his Juniper Junction strip in 1948.

The annual award recognizes the experimental and non-narrative efforts of Canadian cartoonists, including sketchbook material and single-panel works. As with the two major awards, eligibility is limited to a first edition full length or collected work, written by a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada. 

About Doug Wright

Doug Wright (1917-1983) was the critically acclaimed author of Doug Wright's Family, arguably the most widely recognized Canadian comic strip of the mid-twentieth century. Hailed for his unparallelled draftsmanship and his touching, compact narratives, Wright, alongside Charles M. Schulz and George Herriman, is one of only a handful of truly seminal twentieth century cartoonists.

Born in England, Wright immigrated to Canada in his teens. He was a proud Canadian citizen, a fact often reflected in the modest, suburban Ontario life depicted in his most famous strips.
