Drawn and Quarterly’s new ‘Nipper’ book

Great news for fans of Doug Wright: Drawn and Quarterly Books is getting ready to release the next installment of it’s popular Nipper soft-covers reprinting classic Wright work from the 1960s. This one will be called Nipper: 1965 – 1966 and will include 104 strips from what is arguably Doug Wright’s peak period as a cartoonist.

As Wright serves as the inspiration for the DWAs, these books mean a lot to us. But any fan of comics will find something here to enjoy. The drawing is clean and articulate, managing to convey complex ideas without the help of a words. I mean, think about that for a second. How do you even do that once? Then, multiply that by 30-odd years — mind-boggling.

Here’s sample from one of the strips in the book. (You can see how it ends at D+Q’s site.)

As an added bonus D+Q gives a sneak peek at Seth’s new book, The Great Northern Brotherhood of Canadian Cartoonists (love that title), which dedicates a whole chapter to Wright. Here’s a look below:

The way he “dramatizes” a typical Nipper strip here is subtle and clever. The rest can be found at D+Q’s blog.
